She's half-way to a year. I can't believe it. It hurts my heart to think about the tiny floppy baby with the newborn cry being gone forever, but she does so much cool stuff now.

I've been a total false promiser on the pregnancy posts here.

Let's talk prenatal care.

After the home test or tests (I maybe went through five or six in the days leading up to my doctor's appointment) it was time to have it confirmed at the doctor's office.

Your regular doctor usually won't give you a blood test. They give you pretty much the same test you took at home. It's kind of annoying.

My old doctor's office was in a medical building adjacent to a cemetery. I pulled into one of the parking spots facing the cemetery, then pulled out and reparked somewhere else. I'm a little superstitious, especially while pregnant. I spent most of my pregnancy with Stevie Wonder stuck in my head.

Everybody was all business. They gave me instructions on what to do with the cup, the doctor came in with the results, and I let my doctor know I had a list of questions. She said to go ahead, but she probably wouldn't know the answer since she's not an OB. Um, okay. One question: "I'm a little worried about miscarriage, at this point how likely is it that it won't stick?"

"Oh, miscarriage isn't a big deal. It's very common. All of my girlfriends have had them."

Wow.

So she gave me a referral to an OB in the same building. I made an appointment knowing I probably wouldn't keep it because I wanted a natural childbirth and had a feeling whoever she referred me to wasn't going to be a good match. I was right.

Before my appointment with said OB, I called to ask if I would have to get a pap smear. I had recently had one and didn't want anybody poking around up there if it wasn't necessary. Stuff gets extra sensitive when your pregs and a pap smear can make you bleed a little. Any blood is terrifying when you are freshly pregnant. They said, yes, I would have to get one. When I asked if they could just look at my medical records, the nurse said "We can't just take your word for it."

I was finding my medical group to be a little on the chilly side. Enter midwives.

Turns out my HMO had a few midwife practices I could choose from. This was great news. Midwives have excellent c-section (no thank you), episiotomy (no way), and natural birth (sign me up) rates. They also have a reputation for longer prenatal appointments and patience for their patients. The kind I got hooked up with, Certified Nurse Midwives, can deliver babies without a doctor present, write prescriptions and referrals, and order tests.

When I called to make an appointment, I asked if I needed to bring proof of pregnancy, which another practice told me I needed. The nurse responded, "Nope, we believe you." Much better. Pap smear? Not if I've had one recently. Excellent.

My first appointment lasted almost an hour and started with "Congratulations!" I nearly cried, because nobody had said that to me yet. You know what else? I got to keep my clothes on. In fact, I got to keep my clothes on my entire pregnancy. Because, guess what, unless you think something is wrong, there isn't any reason to go poking around down there. Surprising right?

The almost hour-long appointment was spent getting my family history, giving me the basics on what I should expect in the early weeks of my pregnancy, and addressing my questions and concerns. I would be alternating between the three midwives in the practice at my monthly appointments so that I could get to know each of them. I would give birth in a fancy alternative birthing room that boasted a queen-sized bed, birthing balls of all sizes, a birthing tub, and a rocking chair. I would only need to see a doctor if something went seriously wrong and I needed a C-section.

I left my appointment with a folder welcoming me to pregnancy, a referral for an ultrasound to calm my fears, and a smile on my face. I was stoked.

midwife image: crunchydomesticgoddess.com haha.

sorrys!

So, don't make promises to keep your blog updated the day before you return to work. Fashionable nursingwear. I could feel stuff going on in there. Weird cramps, pinches. Stuff that I had never experienced before.

I was standing in the most disgusting venue in all of Chicago, Ronny's, watching my friend's band, Blood Feathers, play and I felt it and I knew. Ola's first show. Over the next two weeks she attended her dad's show, Pavement, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and on the day I found out I was pregnant she was on stage in my belly while I played with my band. I remember when we were loading our equipment on to the stage I asked my bandmate to lift my rig for me and he was all "Yeah, I kind of thought you shouldn't lift it." Because everybody thought I was pregs before I even was. Mama likes her beer and I hadn't had a drink since we started trying.

From the moment I looked at that stick with the two lines on it I was terrified. I wasn't scared of being a parent or pregnancy or even giving birth, just scared it would get erased somehow. So I didn't tell my family or most of my friends for fourteen weeks. I suck at keeping my own secrets. I really don't know how I did it.

I was too superstitious to document any of it then, so congratulations, Morningnoonannight, you're now a Mommy blog. And I'm starting from day one. I'll skip the boring parts and relive the making of my mommyhood. I think it might turn out a little different from other pregnancy blogs since I'm now sporting some hindsight. It is 20/20 you know.

Garfield Park!

When my father came into town on an especially cold Chicago winter day, I thought it would be the perfect time to finally check out The Garfield Park Conservatory. I drive past it every day on my way to work, but have never managed to stop in. My friends who are parents can't get enough of the place, so I wanted to see if the childless could have fun there, too. We can!

We were lucky enough to be there on one of their Sweet Saturdays, which meant a treasure map of sweet stops where we learned about and sampled everything delicious that grows there. Cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon, coconut, and agave were my favorites.

There was free haagen-dazs ice cream, live music, crafts and activities for the wee ones, food vendors (including vegetarian!) and a packet of seeds prize at the end of the treasure hunt.

Unfortunately for you, the Sweet Saturdays are over for this year, but these events look like they could be even better:

Fleurotica

Green and Growing Fair

Beer Under Glass

You'll definitely be seeing me at Beer Under Glass.

The Pops in The Palm Room

(Slightly) older than The Pops, Century Agave. I fell in love with the Koestritzer Schwarzbier. The giant sunshiny, lofty, chic space didn't hurt either. And it wasn't crowded.

We were totally full, but Katie wanted me to see Clifton's Brookdale so bad, we went there for dessert. Also in downtown L.A., it's a Cafeteria built in the 1930's decorated in a woodland lodge theme. There are waterfalls, animated stuffed woodland creatures, wall to wall scenic murals, trees, and a little chapel in a mountain. It used to be even more over the top. We were able see photo evidence of that and check out the place's history and artifacts in the banquet room on the third floor.

My tres leches was pretty good, too.

We ended the night drinking local beers and finishing off these seating card trees for the wedding. Katie's boyfriend gets bonus points for cutting out every one of those little leaves while watching Project Runway with us.

Before setting off for SF, we had breakfast at the cutest, tastiest, little outdoor cafe, The Trails, which is inside Griffith Park. The food (mushroom-cashew savory pie and iced coffee for me) was all veggie/vegan friendly and delicious. They had all kinds of baked goods with herbs and lavender in them. And I saw a coyote come out of the woods while we ate!

Our hotel in San Francisco: Good Hotel was pretty sweet. It's made mostly of reclaimed or recycled building materials, has this neat little sink that runs water when you flush the toilet so you can wash your hands before the water fills the toilet tank, and is a lot like staying inside a ReadyMade magazine. They are somehow affiliated with the magazine, because they have a ReadyMade vending machine in the lobby and I recognized some completed ReadyMade projects in the hotel's decor. Also in the lobby: a place where you can very easily sign up to volunteer locally, bicycles for borrowing, a photobooth, and a puppy channel on flatscreen.

Oh, and my room cost $89 a night. Brian and I once slept in our car in SF because the only affordable room we could find had literally 20-30 roaches crawling the walls.

The Wedding:

Sooo impressed with the D.I.Y. woodland-themed decor. Everything was cute and cozy and so very fitting for Callie and Jay.

The wedding was held in a lodge in the Berkeley Hills, The Brazilian Room.

Callie's dress, 1968 Bill Blass was actually featured on Good Morning America before she snatched it up.

They walked down the aisle to Thirteen by Big Star which obviously got everyone sobbing, except for Katie (singing Boogie Shoes in her head to prevent said sobbing).

The cake was uhhhmazing, especially loved the little owl couple/ bride and groom.

The centerpieces consisted of bunches of wildflowers, votives in Ball jars, little woodland creatures (I think from the couple's personal collection), moustaches on sticks (fun for everybody!), Katie's little potted, hand-embroidered table numbers, a silhouette of the couple in a vintage frame, and the favors which were antique keys in stamped pouches.

With D.J.s Carrie and Kylee rocking the house, the night was perfect.

I tried out two of the best brunch places while in SF, Foreign Cinema in The Mission, and a French Bistro The Butler and The Chef, Looooved The Butler and The Chef. Their pastries and quiche looked incredible.

Another good find: the fabric outlet in the Mission, found a bunch of great trim for my bags at insanely cheap prices.

On the road back to L.A. we stopped in Gilroy, The Garlic Capital, where we bought garlic ice cream and garlic lollypops at The Garlic Shoppe, a place which peddles all kinds of garlicy goods and Thai home decor? Also in Gilroy, tons of really great antique shops. I picked up this scary mid-century owl and little bear guy mounted on genuine California redwood.

We hit up a carnival in Soledad. Jeremy lost the gun game.

And, finally, we arrived at The Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. The Madonna Inn is a themed room hotel with some fantastic ornate vintage kitsch decor. I highly recommend clicking the link and checking out some of the guest suites. This is Katie's Favorite Place in The World. Since she wanted to pick up one of their signature goblets for her collection, we had a drink in their bar, where you can sit in these sweet vinyl club chairs and the sassy bartender will begrudgingly keep you in peanuts for the duration.

And that's where my trip pretty much ended with the onset of the virus from hell. But, good times, good times. Thanks to my hosts, Katie and Jeremy, and congrats to Callie and Jay!

diaper bags diaper bags

<img style="display:block; It promised a restaurant, antiques, and a food co-op. Since it was on our way home, and we hadn't done anything touristy yet, we thought we'd check it out. We are so glad we did.

It wasn't just a brewery, it was a colorful little magic land with all of my favorite things, beer, antiques, and natural foods. The people hanging out there were a regular cast of characters as well.

Adamstown had a lot of antique shops already, but the brewery seemed to be ground zero. It was a huge maze of an antique mall, with the sellers present in their booths, and nearly everything in mint condition and expertly curated. This means we couldn't afford anything we liked, but it was still so fun to look.

The Wonderful Good Market had all kinds of organic and natural foods, plus plants for sale, and a bakery that made fresh bread, including the beer bread that we picked up along with some raw milk cheese. AND they had a sample bar with delicious baked goods.

Then, the restaurant.. Black Angus was completely decked out in fancy antiques and memorabilia, and had a very extensive and impressive menu. It's mostly seafood and meat, but they had veggie options, and seemed willing to whip up something special to suit your dietary needs. We sat at the antique bar, sampling the beer on tap. We took home a mixed six pack, and my favorite was The Fat Dog Oatmeal Stout. Sooo good.

We didn't have time to tour the brewery, but that is an option. We did check out the brew hall where I believe they hold their festivals and have live music. There was a separate beer tasting bar there, where some locals, possibly antique dealers, seemed to be hanging out.

The place is family owned. Brimming with Stoudt's.

It was the best possible stop on our looong roadtrip, and if you find yourself traveling through Pennsylvania sometime, check it out.

Stoudt's

Route 272

2800 North Reading Road

Adamstown, PA 19501

The restaurant:

Some treasures we wish we coulda taken home with us:

And the Fat Dog Oatmeal Stout:

While searching for an image of the label, I found this one over at Dog Hill Kitchen.

They've concocted a recipe for Stoudt's Fat Dog Beer Bread that I would absolutely love to try. Up in my mom's unit, there's a drop ceiling to conceal the duct work for her air conditioning. In the basement, we have dusty, ugly exposed beams because the basement is unfinished. This is a problem because my sewing studio is down there, and dust is constantly getting knocked down onto my work surface.

I have always been a huge fan of tin ceilings, who isn't? But everything I've ever seen available to get the effect of a vintage tin ceiling has been too expensive.

Enter Ceilume tiles.

My friend, Katie, gave me a tip on these, because she discovered the company will mail out free full-sized samples, and she thought she could hang a tile or two on the wall for decoration, which she can. But they work even better in their intended capacity as incredibly inexpensive and easy to install faux tin ceiling. They are made of vinyl, but can be painted (and come in colors and a bunch of different designs from victorian to modern) , and once they're all the way up on the ceiling, I really don't think you can tell.

Plus, they are recyclable, use 75% less raw material than regular ceiling tiles, and are cheaper to ship. I don't mean to gush, but there are also some cool fire-safe features and they won't get ruined if your roof leaks.

So, Katie, thanks for the tip on the free samples. And, yeah, I do actually intend to buy the product.

So, check them out: Ceilume

Wedding On the Delaware

So, the last two weeks have been marathon wedding weeks. Here are some photos from the first one we attended, in Philadelphia on a beautiful old estate on the Delaware River called The Glen Foerd Mansion

Here is all the correspondence and paper from the wedding, designed by the bride herself. I believe the inspiration was a photo of a feather in the sand, taken on the vacation of the proposal. Feathers were enclosed with the invitation.

The (very tall) groom, Mickey, with his (very small) grandmother:

The bride with her stepfather. The back of that dress, "Marrielle" in gold by Raylia was absolutely gorgeous:

As much of the bridal party as I could fit in one frame. I think there were ten each of bridesmaids and groomsmen. The bridesmaids wore their own butter yellow or ivory (our wedding colors!) dresses and the groomsmen wore their own suits with ties silk-screened by Cyberoptix. Flowers were by Jessica Weeks, and hairpieces by Gillian Chadwick:

Mickey and Lauren eating at their own table in front of the mantel which I thought was very romantic, but apparently also a political move. They were able avoid choosing who from their very extensive list of close friends and family to sit with:

The beautiful and DELICIOUS cake! It was all chocolate, with strawberries. We were given extra pieces to take with us, which were gobbled up on the fourteen hour drive home:

My sister found the spot that matched her outfit:

My mom, me, my sister. She is obsessed with not having anything flame-retardant near her child. It sounds kinda weird, but she has a point. Pretty much all baby sleepwear and bedding is flame-retardant. She says that at some point in the seventies or eighties a mass paranoia of spontaneously combustible babies emerged.

Babies aren't particularly flammable, and all those anti-fire chemicals can't be good for them, so I'll indulge the lady.

Here are some great materials I found, all organic and non-toxic.
There are a few random endeavors for which I have become an unpaid advocate.
One is my phone company, which actually just started paying me for my passion.
Another is Wii Fit.
And a biggie is The Chicago Public Library.
I was born and raised in Chicago. So, I remember their childrens summer reading program ( I think it was called The Great Book Log?) where we got stickers on a treasure map until we read a certain amount of books, and then earned a prize from a treasure chest and our name in the paper. I think they still do an updated version of this program.
I remember going there every couple of weeks with my dad so he could stock up on documentary video rentals.
And of course there was every research project of my entire academic career.
The only thing I ever found frustrating was getting newly released or obscure books. You had to go in and request them and then get on a waiting list to finally get to read them once they arrived. And if you were at a small branch it took a while. After I finished college, the library and I sort of lost touch.
When we bought our house a few blocks away from the Humboldt Park Branch, I decided to see if they had a website, and boy do they.
Getting a new book is now easier (and cheaper) than shopping on Amazon.
Just type in your library card number, search for whatever you are looking for, and place it on hold. It will be sent usually within a week to your library of choice. And then you can either renew it online or drop it off at any library location when you are done with it.
Amazingly convenient.
Plus every branch has free wi-fi and computers (often laptops) available for checkout within the branch, workshops and lectures and discussions, and quirky perks like the fishing poles you can check out at the Humboldt Park branch for fishing in The Humboldt Park Lagoon.
So, anyway, the real reason for this post: The library has recently started rebranding itself to appeal to people like you and me. The campaign is called Not What You Think. It seems to be working, because I noticed it when I saw an ad on a bus of a hipstery-looking girl with tattoos and a library ID and, at first glance, thought it was someone I knew.
Their newest effort is a contest for artwork for this campaign, and my favorite entry just happens to be by a very talented coworker of mine, Micah Taupule and it's called StereoLit. I love the Mucha-looking girl with the headphones, and the Chicago tattoos. It's a tough competition, and the other entries are giving Micah a run for his money. So, go check them out and vote by logging into Flickr and adding your choice as a favorite. And choose Micah's!

Not What You Think Contest
Chicago Public Library

Sew Urban

So, now Urban Outfitters has sewing supplies.

I scored a couple Built By Wendy patterns from a clearance bin at Urban a year and a half ago, but it seemed like they had gone straight to clearance and I took it as a sign that it didn't work out.

Not sure how I feel about this one.

They happen to be selling the machine I've had my eye on for some time now, and I guess I do fit their demographic according to the facebook quiz I took today, so maybe they are on to something.

It seems pretty geared toward dabblers, but maybe more people will get hooked and make their own clothes instead of buying that Urban Renewal crap they peddle. That's the point. I found this creative lady a while back in a feature for I.D. magazine about your momma's figurine companies like Lladro coming out with stuff for folks like me and probably you. This is Megan Bogonovich. She is a ceramicist from New Hampshire who has gotten a fair amount of press lately.
Besides her high end ceramic sculptures for sale through artstream, she also has neat pieces available on Etsy (user name melabo). There are animals with extra or misplaced appendages made from combinations of different molds. There are wedding cake toppers and pretty tiles. The Etsy stuff is very reasonably priced.

I have these two:

Here are the links:

Megan Bogonovich

Melabo on Etsy

Artstream

brides and bridesmaids

While cruising etsy for some wedding gifts for upcoming weddings, I stumbled upon this lovely designer.
I'm a pretty thrifty dresser. I'm a photo stylist, and most people think that means brushes and makeup and racks of clothing.

Nope.

Mostly towels and sheets and racks of bedspreads.

And the occasional model in a bed.
